About the Planets
Our solar system has eight planets: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. In 2006, the International Astronomical Union (IAU) — a group of astronomers that names objects in our solar system — agreed on their own definition of “planet.” This new definition caused Pluto’s famous “demotion” to a dwarf planet, and reduced the solar system census from nine planets to eight.

Halley’s Comet
Halley’s Comet (officially designated 1P/Halley) is the most famous periodic comet in history, visible from Earth every 75 to 76 years. It was last seen in 1986 and is next projected to reach perihelion (closest approach to the Sun) in July 2061.
Why It’s Famous
- Recurring Visits: Before English astronomer Edmond Halley studied the comet in 1705, people thought comets only passed through the solar system once. Halley calculated that historic sightings in 1531, 1607, and 1682 were the same object returning, fundamentally changing our understanding of the night sky.
- Deep History: Observations of Comet Halley have been recorded for over 2,000 years, with the earliest documented sighting dating back to 240 BCE in Chinese chronicles.
The 2061 Return
- The 1986 appearance of Halley was relatively dim because the Earth and the comet were on opposite sides of the Sun.
- The upcoming return in July 2061 is anticipated to be a much brighter, more spectacular viewing event because the comet will pass between the Earth and the Sun, making it much closer and easier to spot.
